Songfacts:
Moskow Nights is often thought of as a Russian folk song; however it comes from the time of the Soviet Union. It was commissioned in 1955 by the Soviet Ministry of Culture. Its original title was Leningrad Nights. In 1957, it won first prize at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow, and then went on to win an international song contest abroad. The main theme is used to this day as a jingle on many Russian radio stations.
In 1962 British Dixieland Band Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen covered this song under the title Midnight in Moscow and reached Nr 2 in the US Billboard Charts.
