Songfacts:
This six minute fireworks of ideas and joy of playing provides a
playground for all those who would like to improve on their skills in
modern jazz. The theme of the traditional Gospel song Down By The Riverside is fairly simple, whereas the improvisations on this theme are quite elaborate. Each note played is documented in the jazzinotes edition
and even the chords are notated. You will discover how the original
chords were re-harmonized, which scales are used and most of all, which
voicings are played on the piano. These voicings, played by Christian Sands
, are absolutely terrific. Sometimes they have up to 10 voices, which
means that they are very rich. With this in mind it is fascinating to
hear how easily and naturally everything comes across.
Some notes on the arrangement:
There are only three themes: A, B and C - each one with its own chord
progression. Because the original harmonies are very simple and don’t
change during several bars, they render possible a lot of
re-harmonizations and very interesting turnarounds. You
will discover all of them in the jazzinotes edition.
Some notes on the musicians:
Band leader Christian McBride, * May 31st, 1972; there have been very few bass players as band leaders since the times of Charles Mingus, Christian McBride has played with a lot of great jazz (and pop) musicians: Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Sting, John Scofield to name but a few. Yet his younger musical counterparts gained experience in the realm of jazz, too:
Pianist Christian Sands, * May 22nd , 1989; played together e.g. with Wynton Marsalis, Rufus Reid, Patti Austin and Bill Evans.
Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., *December 6th, 1982; having played together with Kurt Elling, Wynton Marsalis, Maceo Parker, Benny Golson he won himself the 2013 „Rising StarAward” from Down Beat magazine. He also achieved several Grammies, e.g. one together with the Christian McBride Trio for the album The Good Feeling.
Some notes on the lyrics:
The origins of the traditional Gospel song Down By The Riverside go back to the 80s of the 19th century and originally it was sung as a work song. As with many Gospel songs its author and history are chiefly unknown. Its hook „Gonna lay down my burden, Down by the riverside” refers to the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan and to another passage from the Bible, where a soldier lays down his arms by the river and is being baptized - a downright pacifist theme.
