Songfacts:
Herbert Grönemeyer is one of Germany’s most famous musicians. He was born in Göttingen in 1956 and initially lived mainly in Bochum. There he came to music through the theater. In 1976 he became musical director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum and worked there with Peter Zadek and Pina Bausch, among others. Although he never attended drama school, he starred in numerous plays and films. His first two albums Grönemeyer and Zwo had no commercial success (the debut album even received a golden lemon for the ugliest cover). Only after switching to EMI did the breakthrough come: since 1984 all of his studio albums have been at number 1 in the German charts. The song Ich hab' dich lieb (I love you) comes from the aforementioned 1980 album Zwo, which was initially unsuccessful. Later there were numerous live recordings of it. One of these is also available from jazzinotes.
