Songfacts:
For some years we offer the bestseller The Cat (Jimmy Smith) in the interpretation of Seamus Beaghen: here. Now we are proud to publish an original version of Jimmy Smith. It is a note-for-note transcription of a concert in Germany 1988, recorded of the german TV station ZDF. Here is the video of this tune, here you may watch the whole concert.
The jazzinotes version may be played with or without pedal. You find the explanation for both in the sheet music. The rhythm pattern of the el. guitar is notated, too.
Jimmy Smith (* 8.12.1925 or 1928 in Norristown, † 8.2.2005 in Phoenix) is considered the most important innovator of organ playing in modern jazz. He popularized the Hammond organ and gave a new toch to it. Before the el. organ was presumed to be the instrument of the poor people with a poor sound. Jimmy Smith, in former times piano player, risiled in 1954 for one year to experiment with this instrument. Then his concerts in Philadelphia were a great success. After that he recorded some albums as a band leader for Blue Notes. In 1962 he changed to Verve and recorded some commercially very successful albums. With his funky playing, influenced by Blues and Gospel, he was an important representative of Hard Bop and Soul Jazz. Typical for his playing of fast tunes is that he plays the bass line with his left hand and only supports this line by the pedal with a few accents. Exactly this way he does with The Cat: The pedal normally plays only beat 1 and 3 as staccato. Only during two chorusses and in the outro the pedal plays an independent voice. This is notated in the jazzinotes edition.
The Cat originally was recorded on the album of the same name 1964 together with other compositions for big band of Lalo Schifrin (and other composers). This album reached position 12 of the US Pop Album Charts 1964.
