Songfacts:
You Never Can Tell, also called C’est la vie (after the repeated lyric line in the chorus), was written by Chuck Berry
(* 1928 in St. Louis, † 2017 in Wentzville, both Missouri) during a two years prison stay and was published shortly after, 1964, as a single. The words tell us the story of an uprising and former poor young couple, which may be considered as typical for the 50s. Indeed the song is played in Quentin Tarentinos movie Pulp Fiction 1994 exactly for this attitude towards life of this time and got famous since then. The song was many times covered, e.g. by Emmylou Harris, Bob Seger and Status Quo. The original recording for the jazzinotes score is a learning YouTube video of Dave Powers, which is very helpful to learn some quite easy techniques of accompaniment on the piano.
