Songfacts:
With the jazzinotes edition of In Your Own Sweet Way, a composition by Dave Brubeck, it is possible to meet jazz pioneers Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Red Garland (piano) and Paul Chambers (bass ) to look over their shoulder, so to speak: How did these musicians think and communicate about music around 1956, the time it was recorded? It is comforting for us born later that these jazz giants were not perfect either. Because they sometimes play different chords and scales at the same time, which is a serious mistake for jazz purists. Take, for example, the last bar of the A sections: While Davis and Garland consistently play excessively with the whole-tone scale there, Coltrane and Chambers sometimes also use Mixolydian at the same time. In other passages, too, it becomes clear how insecure and searching the 30-year-old John Coltrane still moves (while five years later he moves purposefully and consistently in the scales, e.g. in the jazzinotes edition of My Favorite Things). But it is precisely this seeker, eager to experiment, and daring that makes the interplay of the four jazz pioneers (the drum part is not included in the jazzinotes edition) so exciting and beautiful!
