Songfacts:
The fantastic recording, the basis of the jazzinotes' transcription, dates back from the year 1968. The session performed before a small audience took place in the private studio of German entrepreneur Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer in Villingen-Schwenningen in Southern Germany. The musicians are Oscar Peterson (piano), Sam Jones (double bass) and Bobby Durham (drums). The album was published under the label MPS. Oscar Peterson was always at ease in the small studio in Villingen-Schwenningen and returned several times to this place to record for MPS. Some of these recordings became masterpieces as e.g. Nica's Dream. Another of these pearls is also available at jazzinotes’: Summertime.
The long (7:49) and varying (e.g. swing in the beginning and Latin in the end) recording makes it possible, so to speak, to peek over Oscar Peterson’s shoulder at one of his musical gems: his left hand voicing, his frantic melodies in the right hand, his quiet chord runs with left and right hand combined, his block chords (e.g. in the first and last B part), his elaborate and flawless ornaments etc. The interplay of piano and double bass is exactly documented, too. Sometimes the fundamental is omitted in the piano (and played only by the double bass). Peterson uses "melodic" left hand voices: they are flowing one into the next, often in fourths (especially in the 7alt chords).
The chord symbols illustrate the logic of the harmonies and their scales. There are some runs where the double bass and the piano don't really agree, particularly in the 7aug chords. This is also documented.
