Songfacts:
La Cumparsita is probably the most famous and most frequently performerd tango. Gerardo Hernan Matos Rodriguez (1897-1948 in Uruguay) ist the composer. A composer collegue (Miguel Villasboas) tells that Rodriguez sold the composition fo 50 Pesos to an Argentine editor. The same day he bet this sum on a horse and lost.
"La cumpersita" means "carnival parade". The tune was originalliy
composed for this purpose: as a march for a "murga" (street group) of
the carnival in Montevideo.
The jazzinotes edition of La Cumparsita is closely based on the original recording by the Orquesta Filarmonica de Buenos Aires under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, a live recording that can be seen as a YouTube video (click above). This interpretation is similar to that of the Berlin Philharmonic under Daniel Barenboim at the Waldbühne Berlin (see corresponding video above, where the recording unfortunately is not complete).
Attention: We also offer a piano and an ensemble version: easy piano and in the interpretation of Ercaliffo.
Recommendations concerning the instrumentation:
This Arrangement tries to support you in your instrumentation. It is very flexible:
- There is also a C part for each of the transposing instruments (Bb clarinet, Bb bass clarinet, F horn and Bb trumpet). This instrument can be replaced or doubled by a C instrument, in particular by a synthesizer.
- The strings can be replaced or doubled by a synthesizer with strings sounds. For this you find the part “Strings”.
- The percussion instruments can be combined in different ways. You find the combined par “Percussion” for this.
- The interpretation of the lead melody in the prescribed fast tempo sometimes requires virtuoso skills. The melody can be simplified by omitting individual notes.
- The harp can be varied as desired and possibly replaced by guitars.
- The piano can be replaced by marimba or vibraphone. There are special parts for this. In this case, the left hand of the piano must be played by another instrument. A bass clarinet is intended for this, the positions of which are marked. Other instruments such as trombone, cello, bassoon, etc. would also be possible (or a second marimba or vibraphone).
