Songfacts:
The New Orleans born pianist James Booker (1939-1983) achieved not only failed concerts, but also sensational masterpieces again and again, e.g. with Little Tune For Lefty, which was performed live in Leipzig and is documented on the album Let's Make A Better World!. These up- and downturns were related to his drug problems, which had existed since a serious childhood traffic accident in which he received morphine pain therapy. As a studio musician, he was in great demand all his life. He played for B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Ringo Starr, Doobie Brothers, Huey Smith and Lionel Hampton. But his solo career stalled again and again because of drug problems, which also led to his "trademark", the eye patch with a star (infection due to a dirty injection needle), and to his untimely death.
