Songfacts:
Carole King (civil name Carol Klein), born 1942 in Brooklyn, is one of the most influential song writers. More than 100 of her songs climbed in the top 100 of the US charts. She did not only compose for various interpreters (like The Everly Brothers, The Drifters, The Byrds, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Céline Dion), but also influenced with her composition style e.g. The Beatles and later on (in the 90s) Tori Amos and Tracey Chapman. But as singer and pianist, too, she was very succesful (even if some of her albums were not): Tapestry, on which you find You’ve Got A Friend, released 1971, is one of the most successful albums of pop. The LP got four grammies and was sold more than 25 million times.
Even better known ist the interpretation of James Taylor, who was No 1 in the US charts in 1971.
